Thriller is a film genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The main aim for a thriller is to keep the audience alert and expecting something dramatic to occur. Thriller's usually include a plot that with life and death situations that are very dramatic, and serious. They also usually include a plot twist or a cliffhanger, keeping the audience unsure on what is going to happen next. Many include a psychological aspect, forcing people to examine certain characters to figure out the actual plot. They're many Sub-Genres in a thriller, some could include Action, Crime, Mystery, Psychological, Science Fiction and Religious etc. Thrillers are exciting. They are dangerous. And they should leave us feeling satisfied that not only did the hero save the world from, but we learned a little something in the process.
Here are my top 5 favourite Thriller films of all time:
1. Inception (2010)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Director: Christopher Nolan
Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard
Why I like it?: The plot is very complex, and it took me a few times to watch it to really get the truth. It's quite hard to explain even now, but it is basically about a group of people that have been able to travel through peoples minds, to see their true thoughts, but the main character is ordered to plant a thought in another characters mind, however the plot is a twister. You come to understand the reality only at the end of the movie, and then you realise that you were wrong all along.
2. Se7en (1995)
Genre: Thriller/Crime
Director: David Fincher
Actors: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow
Why I like it?: It's a pretty old film, and I only watched this film recently, however the main reason why I enjoyed it so much is because of the pure action and crime involved in it. The main plot is about a retiring officer and his soon to be replacement track a serial killer who is using the seven deadly sins as his guide to staying alive.
3. Shutter Island (2010)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Director: Martin Scorsese
Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley
Why I like it?: Again like Inception another film involving DiCaprio, I had to watch a few times to truly realise what a great film this is. This is a film you must watch carefully or you won't be able to keep up with the main plot. I enjoyed it because it was very unexpected, and movies like that is why I enjoy them, it keeps your eyes peeled and expecting something next. The plot is a escape of a murderer bringing Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress located on a remote, isolated island.
4. Rocky (1976)
Genre: Drama/Thriller
Director: John G Avildsen
Actors: Sylvester Stallone, Talire Shire, Burt Young
Why I like it?: A very old film, but still a truly great action packed film. It was hard to pick from all five of the Rocky films, but it was a coin toss for me between this one and the third one. I chose this one because it was the first and it was Rocky Balboa being the underdog, and no one knew who he was and getting the chance to fight the heavy weight champion of the world Apollo Creed, yes even though Rocky lost he got massive respect because he was an unknown and went the distance.
5. Southpaw (2015)
Genre: Drama/Thriller
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Actors: Jack Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Oona Lawrence
Why I like it?: I loved this film for many reasons, one reason is the pure shock, and drama. The main character Billy Hope is at the peak of his career, and is probably the best boxer in the world. However in just one day his life took a dramatic dent when his wife dies in a dramatic accident, and it all turns bad, but he tries to get it back on track and concentrate on his boxing and being world champion.
