Sub-Genres of a Thriller? - Action Thriller

Sub Genres of a Thriller? - Action Thriller

An Action Thriller uses physical action to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional action film, this sub genre will often have continuous motion and action which could include stunts, fights, races or even battles. Plots written in an Action thriller usually involve a typical theme of heroes and villains, which could include weapons. Most action films include forms of gore and violence, which are usually characters involved in wars and battles, like for example 300 as shown below including a battle. This sub genre consists mainly of super hero marvels which has widely become very popular and common, like Superman and Batman, there's definitely a high demand of these types of films because they are mainly re makes of original films. The main demand for films like this are the high intensity of action, which keeps the audience peeled, that's why directors of films usually concentrate on this, rather than the actual plot. In action thriller films we usually  associate them with having suspenseful and atmospheric soundtrack leading up to a tense situation which builds up the audiences fear. An action film will generally have a fast-paced, centered, and definite plot. “If I don’t pull the trigger, how can I ever be sure you won’t come after my people again? How can I know that?” - F.J. Gale

Here below are some examples of well known Action films:

The Dark Night Rises
Director: Christopher Nolan
Actors: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Plot: Eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) vanished into the night with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman).
Why I like it?: I loved the constant action, even though I didn't fully enjoy the plot of the film, the fast paced action is what this film is all about and that's why I liked it. The film contains great cast of actors. Christian Bale is fantastic as the lead role and his action makes the whole movie far more realistic. Michael Cain is also brilli
ant he gives such a powerful performance. Tom Hardy as Bane is terrifying completely frightening; " Your punishment must be more severe." Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is a spooky and totally what I expected her to be like, just brilliant; "Come with me. Save yourself. You don't owe these people any more. You've given them everything."

What is a Thriller?

What is a Thriller?

Thriller is a film genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The main aim for a thriller is to keep the audience alert and expecting something dramatic to occur. Thriller's usually include a plot that with life and death situations that are very dramatic, and serious. They also usually include a plot twist or a cliffhanger, keeping the audience unsure on what is going to happen next. Many include a psychological aspect, forcing people to examine certain characters to figure out the actual plot. They're many Sub-Genres in a thriller, some could include Action, Crime, Mystery, Psychological, Science Fiction and Religious etc. Thrillers are exciting. They are dangerous. And they should leave us feeling satisfied that not only did the hero save the world from, but we learned a little something in the process.

Here are my top 5 favourite Thriller films of all time:

1. Inception (2010)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Director: Christopher Nolan
Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard
Why I like it?: The plot is very complex, and it took me a few times to watch it to really get the truth. It's quite hard to explain even now, but it is basically about a group of people that have been able to travel through peoples minds, to see their true thoughts, but the main character is ordered to plant a thought in another characters mind, however the plot is a twister. You come to understand the reality only at the end of the movie, and then you realise that you were wrong all along.
2. Se7en (1995)
Genre: Thriller/Crime
Director: David Fincher
Actors: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow
Why I like it?: It's a pretty old film, and I only watched this film recently, however the main reason why I enjoyed it so much is because of the pure action and crime involved in it. The main plot is about a retiring officer and his soon to be replacement track a serial killer who is using the seven deadly sins as his guide to staying alive.

3. Shutter Island (2010)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Director: Martin Scorsese
Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley
Why I like it?: Again like Inception another film involving DiCaprio, I had to watch a few times to truly realise what a great film this is. This is a film you must watch carefully or you won't be able to keep up with the main plot. I enjoyed it because it was very unexpected, and movies like that is why I enjoy them, it keeps your eyes peeled and expecting something next. The plot is a escape of a murderer bringing  Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress located on a remote, isolated island.

4. Rocky (1976)
Genre: Drama/Thriller
Director: John G Avildsen
Actors: Sylvester Stallone, Talire Shire, Burt Young
Why I like it?: A very old film, but still a truly great action packed film. It was hard to pick from all five of the Rocky films, but it was a coin toss for me between this one and the third one. I chose this one because it was the first and it was Rocky Balboa being the underdog, and no one knew who he was and getting the chance to fight the heavy weight champion of the world Apollo Creed, yes even though Rocky lost he got massive respect because he was an unknown and went the distance.

5. Southpaw (2015)
Genre: Drama/Thriller
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Actors: Jack Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Oona Lawrence
Why I like it?: I loved this film for many reasons, one reason is the pure shock, and drama. The main character Billy Hope is at the peak of his career, and is probably the best boxer in the world. However in just one day his life took a dramatic dent when his wife dies in a dramatic accident, and it all turns bad, but he tries to get it back on track and concentrate on his boxing and being world champion.
